🌟Inspiration & MUDs We Support
Where we'd be if not here.
Before the dreams of Mystavaria were woven, we were adventurers like you — wandering old worlds, trading stories by the hearth (or reminiscing in Discord halls), and occasionally getting ourselves into trouble. Every realm we've roamed left a mark on us: some taught us magic, others taught us madness, and a few taught us simply what not to do.
Like most dreamers, we've been influenced by the books we love, the games we play(ed), and the strange and brilliant worlds we wandered through long before building one of our own. This page is a small tribute to the inspirations that lit the spark behind Mystavaria — and a shout out to some of the fellow MUDs we admire, support, and share the road with.
✨ The spark behind Mystavaria.
Mystavaria was born from a love of mystery and magic, immersive worlds, and the power of shared imagination — but also from an eventual desire to build something better.
For a long time, the MUD Avalon: The Legend Lives played a major role in our lives. It was the foundation of our understanding of roleplay, community, and world-building in profound ways, and many of our concepts for Mystavaria originate from there. While we no longer play or participate in the game due to its eventual shutdown and the complex controversies that surrounded its downfall, we also don't ignore the role it played in our journey. Nostalgia is complicated — and we carry forward the parts that inspired us, while being honest about what was left behind.
Of course, we have pulled inspiration from many other things — games, books, TV shows, and just plain old mythology:
- Achaea and other Iron Realms games, for their ambitious mechanics and the gold standard of tutorials and introductions to the MUD genre.
- Akanbar, for their comparable game systems but with a unique flavour of skills.
- Greek and Roman mythology, for timeless themes and stories to influence our lore.
- Neil Gaiman's The Sandman and Derek Landy's Skulduggery Pleasant, which blend surrealism, emotion, and sharp wit in ways we admire.
- Alora's 15+ year old dream journal with a personal source of the surreal to fuel the dream realm.
In building Mystavaria, our goal is not to replicate what once was, but to reimagine what could be: a new world born from lessons learned, mutual respect, and a healthier relationship between players and the people who bring the game to life with them.
