⌨️ What is a MUD?

For people who write 5-page backstories and cry in taverns.

A MUD — short for Multi-User Dungeon — is a multiplayer text adventure game where everything happens through typed commands. Want to peer into a bakery? Type LOOK. Smell the pie? SMELL PIE. Steal it? STEAL PIE (we do not endorse this). It's like a choose-your-own-adventure novel, but the world responds, evolves, and has other players doing equally questionable things alongside you. No voice acting, no cutscenes, and no graphics... unless you count the ones your imagination conjures.

MUDs are the ancestors of modern MMORPGs like World of Warcraft and Final Fantasy XIV. But instead of preset dialogue wheels or blinking quest markers, you get open-ended stories, dynamic interactions, and a level of roleplay that still puts many modern games to shame.

🖼️ Why Play a Game Without Graphics?

Because it's immersive in a way modern games often aren't. When you type LOOK TAVERN, you don't just see a pre-rendered building — you read the scent of old wood, the hush of cloaked figures in a corner booth, the flicker of lanternlight on spilt mead. And when you meet another player, they're not just an avatar. They're a living character with motives, quirks, and a backstory that might surprise you.

Plus, text-based worlds are incredibly flexible. Systems evolve, events unfold dynamically, and even the laws of reality can bend to fit the story. And because everything is built by developers, storytellers, and the players themselves, no two MUDs are ever the same.

🏰 What Can You Do in a MUD?

That depends on the game — but in Mystavaria, you can:

  • Join a profession and master skills like magic, swordplay, or prophecy.
  • Explore cities, forests, or an entire dream realm, richly described and full of secrets.
  • Roleplay in real time with other players and NPCs, evolving the world through your choices.
  • Create alliances, rivalries, and drama (the good kind).
  • Contribute to a living world where actions have consequences, and stories evolve.

🧩 Are MUDs Hard to Learn?

Not at all. If you can read, type, and enjoy fantasy or RPGs, you're already 90% there. Mystavaria is built for both newcomers and old-school MUDers alike.

We've got helpful in-game guides, a friendly Discord, and welcoming dreamers ready to answer questions like "how do I open a door?". And honestly? Getting lost a few times and figuring things out is half the fun.

🌀 Still Curious? Try It for Yourself.

Mystavaria is currently in development, but we're getting closer to launch. While you wait, explore our world via our website, check out the classes, or visit one of the MUDs we support if you want to dip your toes in the genre now.

If you've ever wanted to be part of something weird, wonderful, and way more fun than scrolling another algorithm-fed feed — this might just be the realm you've been dreaming of.
