Game Help: Residencies

Not every Mystavarian who wishes to live, work, and trade within a
settlement's walls wants to give up their existing citizenship, or
commit to the rank and duties of full civic life elsewhere. Residency
offers a lighter alternative: for the price of an entry fee and an
annual upkeep, a settlement will open its shops and properties to you
without requiring you to renounce your citizenship or join its ranks.

    Residency vs. Citizenship
Unlike citizenship, residency is not exclusive - you may hold
residency in as many settlements as you can afford to maintain, all
alongside a single citizenship (or none at all, if you prefer to
remain a nomad). Residency does not grant a city rank, does not admit
you to a settlement's government, and residents cannot be appointed
aide to the Magister nor made Magister themselves. What it does grant
is the right to rent and buy shops and homes in the settlements where
you hold it, on the same footing as its own citizens.

    Fees
Taking up residency requires paying an upfront entry fee, and
thereafter an annual fee to maintain it. Fees are set by each
settlement's Crown or Consul, and unpaid annual fees will eventually
see your residency revoked - watch for notices from the local bank,
and use BANK SETTLE RESIDENCY <amount/ALL> to pay down what you owe.

    Where Residency is Unavailable
A settlement will not extend residency to its own native-born, nor to
a settlement of your own citizenship (you already belong there).
Residency is also refused wherever open hostility exists - if your
home city and the settlement in question have declared each other
enemies, or if you have personally been branded an enemy of the
settlement, no amount of coin will secure you a place there. A small
number of settlements (such as Arborvella) do not offer residency to
    anyone at all.

    How to Take Up Residency
Seek out a citizen or NPC of rank Marquis/Marchioness or higher (or
a settlement's registrar) and REQUEST RESIDENCY FROM <player or NPC>.
A player citizen may simply choose to extend the offer, but an NPC
will first want to know you - either through friendship built with
that NPC personally, or through the goodwill of enough of the
settlement's other NPC citizens vouching for you on your behalf. This
bar sits lower than the one for citizenship, in keeping with residency
being the more accessible, non-exclusive option.

    Giving Up Residency
Should you wish to let a residency lapse, use RENOUNCE RESIDENCY
    <settlement>.

    Syntax:
        RESIDENCY
        RESIDENCIES
        REQUEST RESIDENCY FROM <player/NPC>
        RENOUNCE RESIDENCY <settlement>
